SabaSaba is an old-fashioned power trio band crawling out of the city of Turin, Piedmont. Composed of Andrea Marini and Tommaso Bonfilio (already together in Blind Beast) as the loops, tapes, effects manipulators, and Indianizer‘s Gabriele Maggiorotto at the drums, SabaSaba represent the latest addition to the Bologna-based Maple Death Records on which they’re about to release their self-titled debut record (the 24th on Jonathan Clancy‘s outcome). Their experimental project takes industrial, dub and musique concrete as inputs and elaborates on the matter releasing an eerie offspring of the three mentioned genres, characterized by psychedelic wanderings, booming beats, heavy dubbing and processed field recordings. The self-titled debut release sees the trio resorting to tape loops, drum machines, organ, electronic effects, flute, guitar, bells, drums, percussions, and the precious collaboration with Everest Magma/Rella the Woodcutter on Magma (A2). Recorded by the Turin-based musician Paul Beauchamp and mastered by Total Control’s Mikey Young, its artwork has been produced by Carlotta del Giudice and Paul Rafferty.
Embedding inside their music everything that Turin represents – namely: the darkness of foggy winter nights; the cities’ deep connection to white and black magic; the secular mystique one can breathe anywhere inside it; the pride of being among the birthplaces of the Italian anti-system punk scene; and the stubborn isolationism/sociopathy its indigenous people wave carelessly as their vessel -, the SabaSaba trio offers a deep experience both live and on record, dwelling into esoteric rituals of crossbred, obscure music. We’re pleased to present you the Red Nights track that can be streamed via the Soundcloud player at the top of the article, also featuring the cathartic chanting of the Italian Occult Psychedelia conspirators Father Murphy. Push the button!
SabaSaba’s S/T is released on LP coming with insert and download code. The record will be out May 18th, 2018 and you can pre-order it here. PAYNOMINDTOUS is a non-profit organization registered in December 2018, operating since late 2015 as a webzine and media website. In early 2017, we started our own event series in Turin, IT focused on arts, experimental, and dancefloor-oriented music. We reject every clumsy invocation to “the Future” meant as the signifier for capitalistic “progress” and “innovation”, fully embracing the Present instead; we renounce any reckless and ultimately arbitrary division between “high” and “low”, respectable and not respectable, “mind” and “body”; we support and invite musicians, artists, and performers having diverse backgrounds and expressing themselves via variegated artistic practices.
