Siamo giunti all’episodio finale della serie di podcast Threats (vale a dire il sesto) iniziata lo scorso Agosto 2015. Ad essa seguirà la serie Portraits, per la quale ad ogni mix verrà accompagnata un’interessante intervista all’artista coinvolto: appuntamento con PORTRAIT#1 il 14 Febbraio. Il podcast che siamo onorati di presentare oggi è di Francesco Baudazzi, in arte, tra gli altri, Violet Poison ed Obtane (alias ormai defunto). Dal titolo Tecnica del Sogno e firmato a nome Diana Berti, in esso compaiono ben 6 tracce previously-unreleased provenienti dal catalogo / famiglia di Veleno Viola.

Una notevole lettura circa Francesco Baudazzi è rappresentata dall’ultima intervista rilasciata dal musicista, apparsa su Futurismi.it, per la quale abbiamo avuto il piacere di fornire del materiale video relativo alla prima performance completamente analogica di Violet Poison (vedi sotto). Fondatore della label Veleno Viola, creatura strettamente personale nata in seguito alla conclusione del progetto Violetshaped con Shapednoise (e dell’etichetta associata ed in co-gestione, Violet Poison), in passato aveva collaborato con Giorgio Gigli nell’ambito della Zooloft, per la quale uscì, tra il 2009 ed il 2012, un notevole numero di releases a nome Giorgio Gigli & Obtane incentrate sullo sviluppo di techno cupa e dilatata, implacabile e riflessiva allo stesso tempo. I due producer hanno ripreso il rapporto artistico attivando di recente Black Tears, un alias dalle sonorità dark profondamente romantiche (disperate), il cui primo LP uscirà su Veleno Viola il prossimo Febbraio. Un debutto da non perdere per nessun motivo, quindi. Infine, qui è possibile ascoltare la tape di Baudazzi come Bakunin Commando per AMOK Tapes (per l’acquisto: qui).

Avevamo avuto modo di parlare della prima release a nome Diana Berti, Tragedy of the Uncommons per Cuss Fetish, in questa nostra review. Il discorso incentrato su atmosfere fantastiche e sognanti-inquietanti prosegue all’interno del mix THREAT#6, ed anzi viene espanso ed arricchito di sfaccettature per mezzo di pezzi in cui compaiono dei beat marcati di stampo electronic-body-music, tensioni acide-rumorose, ed addirittura dei testi cantati. Al solito, per la tracklist si veda la parte finale dell’articolo, in coda alla versione inglese. Il lavoro dal titolo Tecnica Del Sogno, per 70 minuti circa, rappresenta una selezione stupefacente di materiale proveniente dai meandri più dimenticati degli anni ’80, ai quali l’artista ha attinto e sta attingendo a piene mani. Il risultato è la sbalorditiva concretizzazione sonora di una visione onirica delirante e nebulosa, in diversi passaggi anche pericolosamente rabbiosa. Insomma, qualcosa di piuttosto heavy, in termini di attitudine e costruzione del suono. Ancor più sorprendente è il fatto che delle 21 tracce totali in scaletta, ben 6 provengano dal (futuro) catalogo di Veleno Viola (Monica Hits the Ground, Biomass e Bellatrix?, oltre che lo stesso Diana Berti; piccola parentesi per Corpi Contusi, outsider della scena bolognese, la cui traccia proviene da vecchi archivi). Ognuna di esse sono il prodotto dell’attività di artisti attuali, alcuni dei quali debuttanti, eppure perfettamente in continuità con le sonorità synth-atmosferiche, industriali straight-outta-80s che occupano gran parte del mixato (F.A.R., Derek Jarman, Teknospray). Ciò la dice lunga sull’efficacia dell’opera di recupero e ri-contestualizzazione da parte della label del decennio in questione: tape culture, sperimentazione ”surrealista” e macchine analogiche di bassa qualità hanno (forse) ancora un significato. A tal proposito si può collateralmente trovare lo spunto per la riflessione su tematiche proprie della (post-)società iperdigitale attuale. Qual è, concretamente, la motivazione che sta alla base della ripresa e rivalutazione così massiccia, da parte della critica e di numerosissime etichette, della musica cosiddetta industriale o EBM? Trascurando le varie tendenze di hype, insomma.

L’elaborazione di una risposta appropriata ad un tale interrogativo, ammesso esista (o che sia di effettivo interesse porla) richiederebbe un’analisi accurata, estranea a questo articolo di presentazione del mix e alle nostre capacità stesse. E’ tutt’altro che complesso invece, nel caso di Veleno Viola e di questo podcast, comprendere quale sia l’aspetto più intrigante che l’artista tenti di riproporre, riuscendovi nel modo più elegante e sincero possibile. Si tratta della brutalità di questa famiglia di sonorità dark-wave, old-school industrial in questione, conservatasi tutto sommato integra per una motivazione o per l’altra – refrattarietà al mercato degli artisti coinvolti, numero elevatissimo di releases circolanti in cassetta, mancato interesse o vera e propria impossibilità di grandi opere di ristampa. Diana Berti è un richiamo a quella brutalità-incorruttibilità (leggasi sincerità): alla violenza romantica, morbosa e velenosa per l’appunto. Non è un caso che l’immagine di presentazione dell’etichetta sia il coltello a serramanico caro alla tradizione del Giallo. Tecnica del Sogno è un sentito, totale atto di amore e devozione nei confronti degli anni ’80 realizzato da un artista che all’alba del 2016 si trova in uno dei suoi migliori stati di forma, ispirazione e prolificità, e che attraverso la propria etichetta riuscirà a fornire un altissimo livello di qualità e proposte interessanti per molto tempo a venire. Compratevi del Veleno Viola.

It’s time for the last episode (i.e. the sixth) of the podcast series called Threats we had started back in August 2015. It’ll be followed by the Portraits series, in which every mix will go together with an interesting interview to the artist. Save the date: PORTRAIT#1 is out on February the 14th. The podcast we’re honoured to present today is by Francesco Baudazzi, coming from La Spezia, producing music as Violet Poison and Obtane (now a defunct project) and many others. Called Tecnica del Sogno (Italian words meaning: Technique for Dreaming), six different unreleased tracks coming from the Veleno Viola family appear in it.

A very interesting reading about Francesco Baudazzi appeared on Futurismi.it (we had been glad to provide for it some HD video footage showing few moments of the first all-machines Violet Poison’s performance ever: see below).  Founder of the Veleno Viola label, his own personal creature born after the closure of Violetshaped side-project along with Shapednoise (and of the related label too, Violet Poison), he had been producing music in the past years with Giorgio Gigli, releasing stuff on their ex-label Zooloft. Between 2009 and 2012, a huge amount of records by Giorgio Gigli & Obtane came out, focusing on the development of cloudy and dilated techno music, relentless and meditative at the same time. The two producers are coming back with a joint darkwave-driven outcome called Black Tears, profoundly romantic (and desperate). Their first LP is coming out this February on Veleno Viola, a debut that must not be missed. Finally, here is possible to hear (and here to buy) Baudazzi’s release on AMOK Tapes under the alias Bakunin Commando.

We had the chance to talk about the tape Tragedy of the Uncommons by Diana Berti, out on Cuss Fetish, in this review. The path taken by the artist on it shaping fabulous and unsettling atmospheres, is followed also in the THREAT#6 mix, and it is expanded by the addition of many other facets such as the embedding of strong EBM beats, acid/noisy tensions, and even sung passages. As usual, the tracklist can be found at the end of this article. In the mix Tecnica Del Sogno, taking about 70 minutes, the producer chooses a stunning selection of forgotten music from the ’80s, such as he has been unrelentingly doing. The result is a shocking musical realization of an ecstatic, foggy vision, turning rabid in certain occasions. Hence, we’re talking about some heavy stuff here, both talking about sound construction and attitude.

Even more surprising is the fact that 6 tracks out of the 21 used are coming from the forthcoming Veleno Viola’s catalogue (Monica Hits the Ground, Biomass, Bellatrix?, and Diana Berti himself; the piece by Corpi Contusi comes instead from some old archives, being him an outsider of the experimental scene based in Bologna). Although each one of them is produced by current artists (some do not have a debut-release yet), they’re perfectly matching with the synth-industrial sounds coming straight out of the 80s that dominate the largest part of the mix (F.A.R., Derek Jarman, Teknospray). This fact tells a lot about the recovery and re-contextualization of the 1980 decade done by the label: tape culture, ”surrealist” musical experiments and low-fi analog machines can maybe still have some sort of significance today. Collaterally, one can reflect about the relationship with that culture and the hyper-digital, post-everything present one. What might possibly be the real reason why the so-called industrial / EBM music is massively recovered today (both by labels and critics)?

To provide a proper answer to that question, supposing it does actually exist and that would it be even interesting to think about it, it would require an in-deep analysis which we’re not even able to start on. On the contrary, in the case of this mix and the label, it is not complicated at all to understand what’s the most intriguing aspect Baudazzi’s trying to put into his musical production (managing to do that in the most elegant, truthful way): it’s all about the brutality these dark-wave, old-school industrial vibes express. Brutality that got through the years mostly incorrupted, for a reason or the other – think about the huge amount of releases per artist and the tendency to completely avoid the market, and the missing interest for now in re-press this stuff. Diana Berti is a call for the brutal integrity of the music styles of the 80s, and for a violent, poisounous Romanticism (Violet Poison indeed). It’s not by chance that the logo of the label is represented by a knife, which is the murder weapon in many Italian Giallos. Tecnica del Sogno stands as a heartfelt tribute to the 80s, paid by an artist who’s most likely in his best shape ever, releasing an incredible amount of high-quality music through his many aliases and the label. Get yourselves some Violet Poison.

Final note: the next VP’s release will be out on the newborn label called Il Silenzio del Rumore (Italian for The Silence of Noise) coming out from the very Varvara Festival‘s soul.
