- Stromboli – S/T EP [Maple Death Records, 2015] – “You are across the road, staring into a building, it’s dark outside, you can barely make out a light shining inside from a distant window. Stromboli’s debut EP is that light, a dense ambient propulsive opera created over the course of two years in Bologna. The man behind Stromboli works with limitations, it’s his area of expertise, his confidence. Balance and composure as a mental state, only hinting at harsh noise, an isolationist working away with his 4 track tape machine, his lap steel guitar, and analog organ. Describing boundaries and territories through drones, city-dwelling rhythms, noise landscapes, and elegant melodies, Stromboli defies what is traditionally associated with the ambient genre, by creating a beautiful dark psychedelic rotating world. Stromboli’s self-titled EP is Maple Death Records’ second release and was mastered by Brian Pyle (Ensemble Economique). It comes as a limited edition yellow-ochre (100 copies) cassette tape, inlay printed on thick Modigliani Neve paper. Photography by Giulia Mazza and design by Emanuela Drei“;
- Stromboli – Volume Uno [Maple Death Records, 2017] – “Beneath a saturated nebulous city landscape lies a mirror reflecting sharp, complex particles of light that disappear under the faintest drop of rain, literally silver dissolving into rust, mercury poisoning the train tracks of modern paranoia. Through the cracks, the chilled warmth of Stromboli’s Volume Uno rises, expanding on the notion of a solitary figure gasping for life in an industrial setting. After turning heads with his 2015 debut, Stromboli is back with his second offering of beautiful ambient propulsive landscapes, isolationist harsh noise, and industrial psych. Volume Uno expands Stromboli’s sound deeply with the introduction of the Revox A77 tape machine that Fripp/Eno made famous on their classic ‘No Pussyfooting’. Recorded mainly at night during chronic fits of insomnia and fueled by an unhealthy addiction to Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ flick and Micheal Mann’s neo-noir masterpiece ‘Thief’, Volume Uno opens the gates with the violent thump of ‘Drag Phase’ before morphing into the destructured techno of ‘Downwards’ built on a Suicide-like reverse tape loop. ‘Drop’ showcases exactly what separates Stromboli from his peers, a warm approach to shivering metal factory music, a synthetic blaze cutting through analog ice on a path created by visionaries like Cluster, Harmonia, and This Heat. ‘Arrows’ and ‘White Walls’ lock into a meditative drugged out state of mind, adding a Coil-esque esoteric element that ebbs and flows through shards of decomposed drum machines, organic lap-steel guitar, delayed samplers, all while maintaining the beauty and grace of a Ruth White composition. ‘Glow’ is hyper-ventilation, air chopped by the mutoid rhythms of machines relentlessly attacking the power plant. Recorded in 2015 in his hometown of Bologna, mastered by Andrea Prato in Torino. LP features the stunning photography and artwork of Giulia Mazza“;

PAYNOMINDTOUS is a non-profit organization registered in December 2018, operating since late 2015 as a webzine and media website. In early 2017, we started our own event series in Turin, IT focused on arts, experimental, and dancefloor-oriented music. We reject every clumsy invocation to “the Future” meant as the signifier for capitalistic “progress” and “innovation”, fully embracing the Present instead; we renounce any reckless and ultimately arbitrary division between “high” and “low”, respectable and not respectable, “mind” and “body”; we support and invite musicians, artists, and performers having diverse backgrounds and expressing themselves via variegated artistic practices.
Cristina Ruggieri (’93, Alba) completed her studies at Accademia di Belle Arti, Turin. Beside messing around with materials, she’s passionate about the overall listening experience, whether is it live or in her bedroom filled with stuffed animals.
