Defeating The Anguish Of Being Men: Raskol’nikov for Bindu Sound

Somewhere in the bowels of the Earth still echo the screams of the Fathers and alike from our guts something desperate shakes and struggles in order to come to light.  The goal we aim to reach is the creation of a sound able to justify this commotion  and also helpful in deafeating the anguish of being men.

RASKOL’NIKOV FOR BINDU SOUND

Enjoy!

ENGLISH VERSION

Raskol’nikov is an Italian duo, who researches in its own peculiar way the possibilities of exploring electronic sounds as a magical vehicle. They started through the years several partnerships with musicians of different extraction (Von Tesla, The Sublime, Hjalmar Hach, Schrei der Natur…), from which are born some notable works, interesting without exceptions. The basically opposite personalities of the couple joints on record – and while performing – as such as their synthetizers’ oscillations do. Raskol’nikov  accurately investigates the path of sophisticated avantgrade electronic, now ritual, now lysergic, now harmonic, now cacophonic, in a union that elevates both member’s immaterial identity. Here you can find much more detailed infos on them and their activity: website // FB Page.

Roughly speaking, Raskol’nikov have been self-producing industrial material for six years now. After more than ten releases – which can be browsed here – and several live performances, each intended as an unique event, their music traces well identifiable characteristics despite its huge variety within itself. Maybe this prosperity of styles and experiments is one of the factors that contributed in letting Raskol’nikov remain almost unknown to the public, their high-quality music productions notwithstanding.

“Somewhere in the bowels of the Earth still echo the screams of the Fathers and alike from our guts something desperate shakes and struggles in order to come to light.  The goal we aim to reach is the creation of a sound able to justify this commotion  and also helpful in deafeating the anguish of being men.”

Listening to Raskol’nikov means to abandon the self to an unexplainable reality and to self-alienate in dimensions which cannot be traced back neither to past nor future, to hallucination or revelation, to accident or calculation, to dreams or nightmares, to terrain or celestial. Their music erases rational thoughts and folds the listener in the bowels of the mind, bringing him/her back as close as possible to the original sentiment of participation with the Whole. Raskol’nikov is not the umpteenth noise project all caught up with itself and barely listenable; despite their sonic poetry can be defined as hermetic, due to the reluctance to use soft chords or lounge melodies, it is notable how well-refined sampling is despite the complete self-production. It’s warmly recommended to use headphones while listening to appreciate their sonorous impact that most of the times cannot be satisfactorily supported by computer speakers.

Raskol’nikov are true iconoclasts of our time. Well aware of the contemporary music scene and its techno-logical and estethical possibilities, they don’t give any concession to the clichés of what could be called “alternative music”. Nevertheless, their style can be said to properly fit to the current scene. It promotes an organic amount of sounds that juxtaposes the religiousness of madness to the rhetoric of the culture of “fashion“. We can say that, in the same way in which Dostoevskij’s Raskòlnikov of Crime and Punishment represents moral crisis, the Raskol’nikov duo mirrors the crisis of underground music. It’s no wonder – as already mentioned before – how they still haven’t reach a certain acknowledgement that would allow an “official” production to their releases, despite the exquisite works they’ve already released such as Ara Coeli (2012) and los (2013).

RASKOL’NIKOV FOR BINDU SOUND

The most recent collaborations brought the duo to get in contact with the recently-born independent German label Bindu Sound, which has been casting out a new release in both digital and physical (MC tape) format every month since January 2016. The label’s goal is to enlarge a genuine network among emergent artists in the radical electronic field. Bindu Sound dedicates itself to researching and promotion of original music otherwise relegated to the shadows of the contemporary jungle of sounds, and yet outlines as a new reference point for those who look for not-uniformed frequencies or specific trends.

The young artists who joined the label’s catalogue are Schrei Der Natur, The Black White State, Chang Park, Agitation Φ and, as said, Raskol’nikov [each one of the very effective and high-quality release can be streamed in full here]. Raskol’nikov’s MCs for Bindu Sound are Cometsword (BS001) and Gipsy Future (BS005), released by the end of May 2016. The label uploaded and released a live recording called Live in Bremen on the 20th of February, which can be listened here.

Gipsy Future is born from the collaboration with Schrei Der Natur [here is the official website: http://schrei-der-natur.org/], which is the moniker for a brand new entity/outcome that in few months already released penetrating and daring dark-ambient works, cruelly ethereal and suspended in time [https://soundcloud.com/schrei-der-natur].

Recorded during several long sessions in a study in Bremen, Gipsy Future is maybe the most “pop” work ever released by both Raskol’nikov and Schrei Der Natur. The record presents archaic dithyrambic sonorities, aleatory classicisms mixed with robotic voices, straight basslines and both slow and fast beats to which one could (almost) dance to. Everything is conducted putting an inflexible stress on the abstract connotations and approach. The tape throws itself and the listener into a perverted-yet-romantic gypsy future, maniacal and melancholic at the same time: hallucinated ballads in the middle of the 30th century mutant Hungary, or the solitary deliriums of a drunken cyborg.

Cometsword is the result of a longer but less constant work, characterized by a more ritualistic / desertronic structure. It’s a record of drones and scimitars; an intergalactic warriors’ cosmic ceremony; a super nova’s initiation. Here in this record as well it’s possible to find recurring flute and drum sounds coming right from the abyss of time, oscillating in sidereal echoes and spatio-temporal curves. Raskol’nikov production doesn’t arrest and we’re looking forward to get our hands on the next MC release planned for the Italian label Worldisorder.

In early 2017, we started our own event series in Turin, IT focused on arts, experimental, and dancefloor-oriented music. We reject every clumsy invocation to “the Future” meant as the signifier for capitalistic “progress” and “innovation”, fully embracing the Present instead; we renounce any reckless and ultimately arbitrary division between “high” and “low”, respectable and not respectable, “mind” and “body”; we support and invite musicians, artists, and performers having diverse backgrounds and expressing themselves via variegated artistic practices.
