More than 2 years has gone since Andrei Calin, Alexandru Brusten and Alex Niculae founded in Bucharest the label Hangout Music. Each one of them pretty active in the local scene, they started a project fading from the traditional Drum’n Bass sound, aiming to define their own musical identity. The first few publications were focused on Tech-Step vibes, followed by more complex and advanced works such as The Grey Division project, a dark projection of deep-dnb styles and patterns.
This article stand as an incomplete and very quick overlook at the present deep-dnb European scene. Here, we present a review of the last Hangout Music record out in 2015, produced by Eusebeia and titled Conscious Shift EP (while another one was published by the label few weeks ago; check it here). Further on, we also feature a brief interview to K-Rob (Robert Kisi), a Romanian deep-dnb producer very close to the label. His track I Remember My Dreams was remixed by Eusebeia himself: a snippet of it can be listened from our Soundcloud channel. Last but not least, Robert did also a 1-hour-long, mind-blowing mix for us and for you to listen. Enjoy!
Going back to the The Grey Division project we’ve been mentioning few lines ago, it’s worth noting that it focuses on the post-Autonomic Drum’n Bass explorations and it has absorbed typical Deep, Halfstep and Dark-ish / Ambient elements too, moving away from the traditional dancefloor and aiming to reach the open-minded sector of dnb public. Hangout Music launched the 11-tracks compilation called Event Horizon LP (see the streaming below), in which many European artists appear. Some of them are exponents of small – yet very promising – underground scenes; some comes with strong backgrounds, and others are at their first productions. Interesting musicians like Owl, Dycide, Chet Matuto, Lefty and Hidden Life contributed to this great release. The Event Horizon LP is the first project on The Grey Division, a dark projection of Romanian drum and bass label, Hangout Music. It has 11 tracks of 10 foreign talented arists who took the chance to go deep on their perspective of sound. The LP is what it’s name represents, a method to see things differently. Each of the tracks contributes to your comfort through this Journey, aiming to support new sounds, good artists and new perapectives, the Event Horizon is an exploration of deeper meanings of dnb. As written in the artwork (first image in the article, at the top), the next step in the Grey Division project does not gather many tracks from different producers, but let a single artist develop the concept: Seb Watts, aka Eusebeia. He has been smoothly changing his old project Hidden Life’s style to this new moniker’s one, showing, in the few months after the birth of Eusebeia was announced, a huge creative attitude and a strong initiative. It was first put into form on Conscious Shift EP, released on Hangout Music in December 2015 and that’s why we’re now addressing our attention on this particular release. The record is a 4-tracks EP, available digitally as well as on cassette (limited edition of 50 copies).
To complete the picture about the character, Seb Watts runs his own label Rebellion Electronics too, featuring a cold ambient sound. His first full lenght Post has been published on it. We strongly recommend also the emotional Only Concerned With the Truth EP, out on CX Digital, and the distensive Dawn EP on Omni Music.
The tape is a strongly introspective work, and, as Eusebeia himself stated, the release is built on the idea of “becoming more consciously aware of things and maybe coming to a greater understanding about something within oneself (mentally, spiritually speaking) and having a greater perception of the world around us. A way to undress us by all external influences, focusing our concentration on the realization of the interior peace, expression of equilibrium, harmony, perseverance, a structure where built our real person.”
The opening track, Smoke from the Fire, starts the journey, building our concentration around dragged and riding percussions whose pattern develops on a whispered and softly distorted background pad. The flute is the key element to open the initiation circle: right when the beat takes power setting free the low frequencies, the ceremony begins.

The Temple is the most enlightening track of Eusebeia’s record. The first notes are perfectly fading out from Smoke from the Fire’s mood, and then the opening halfstep beat is pushed to the upper level developing a kind of mystic trance that leaves room, at the end of the percussive sequence, for soft volume shades. In this case, the same pacific flute we’ve been hearing before seems to be more quiet. The Veil of Maya can finally be crossed, leaving us in a sort of absolute-contemplation state, caught between surrounding reverberations, scattered synth progressions, and the deep bassline.
The Temple creates a comfortable environment to continue the concept of rite. Playful drums are guidance to an event meant to honor the shift of your conscience. Alexandru Brusten
Proof is Conscious Shift’s turning point. The track’s rhythm is articulated on fluctuating and whirly elements. It’s time to set the energy free: the sub-sonic bass barrier has been smashed, embracing us with bouncing frequencies that create a vibing sound pattern, at 85 bpm. As stated in the bandcamp page of the record by A. Brusten, here ”the drums, bass and vocal collide into a homogeneous track, giving consistency and personality for which it stands out.”
The final track No more Apathetic You (The Transformation) could be considered, with its overwhelming articulated beats, as the quintessential expression of Eusebeia’s style, almost as a point of no-return for the definition of a whole new genre. Choirs and spiritual melodies anticipate the entrance of celestial sounds, providing a warm listening experience. Ultimately, the beat quietly drowns and everything else fades: there’s nothing left but ourselves.
The positive vibes come as an invitation to becoming more motivated and enthused as the artist reveals its dislike towards apathy. Alexandru Brusten

INTERVIEW TO K-ROB

As mentioned before, we got in touch with the Romanian artist Robert Kisi (aka K-Rob) which is very close to the Hangout Music crew (see for example the show Hangout Music x Open Minds, aired 24/04/2015). K-Rob produced a huge amount of great and deep tracks in the last years, all of which are available here. Further on, since 2014 he hosts the Deep Structure show on the web radio Bassport FM, very well-known amongst bass music lovers thanks to its amazing transmissions. As the name says, Rob’s shows push the listener through the darkest and deepest drum’n bass voids. The several dubplates played between one track and the other always offer the chance to discover fresh artists and labels.
K-Rob agreed answering some questions, and he also recorded an incredible mix for our webzine exclusively, fine-tuned on the dark vibes of his radio shows. Some of the tracks choosen are by some of the greatest names of the emerging deep-dnb scene (such as Sam KDC, Shiken Hanzo, Homemade Weapons, Ahmad), while a discrete amount of them is still unreleased stuff. This explains the many ‘???’ you can see in the tracklist (check it at the end of the article). We recommend you to listen to the mix while reading the interview below, and let your mind wander. Q: We understand that you will strictly focus on production this year. Can you tell us in which way you find inspiration? What does your music describe? Which labels are you working with?
A: Yes, I’m focusing on learning new things and finding new ways to express my emotions through my work, because basically that’s what it is. What I do, what I produce is a reflection of an emotion, a feeling, a state of mind, even a story. I’ve always been attracted to creepy, dark, Sci-Fi sounds, like the ones from game Deus Ex for example.
Q: Can you give us some examples of tunes you made that are particularly relevant and meaningful for you?
A: Sacred black. I made that tune when I was once hospitalised. The melodic line expresses a peaceful state of mind followed by the second part of the track which is more like what I felt at that moment. Another one is Grounders. I got inspired by the TV series The 100. I really liked the idea of the movie, set 97 years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization, when a spaceship housing humanity’s lone survivors, sends 100 juvenile delinquents back to Earth in hopes of possibly re-populating the planet and they found some earthlings called Grounders.
Q: Can you tell us how Deep Structure show was born and where the name came from?
A: It all started back in 2014 when I received a message from Bassport FM to do a spotlight session for them. A few days later they aired the mix and I got another one asking me to do a monthly show and that was it. The name comes from the music I promote. It’s deep, dark, hypnotic.
Q: Are you thinking of a label in particular where you’d like to release music in the future?
A: Yes, I’m curently collaborating with a few cool labels and have a couple of projects I’m working on, but I can’t tell you the names yet. Let’s just say I’ll have a few surpises and I’d recommend following my soundcloud page for future details.
Q: Who are your favourite artists at this moment?
A: Dyl, Natt, Alg0rh1tm, Eusebeia, Akinsa, ILL_K, Homemade Weapons, Sam KDC.
Q: Which is the music that lead your path and let you grow during your life?
A: Oh..that’s quite a long story. It all started when I was 13, a friend gave me a cassette with an electronic music compilation (I really can’t remember the name). I was so thrilled of what I heard that I started searching for new music, new sounds, which today brought me here. The cassette was a compilation of techstep, hardcore drum and bass so initially I leaned in that direction but slowly I kept the deepnes and darkness of that and got to where I am today.
Q: About your music style orientation, we feel it is not exactly appropriate for the drum’n bass scene, meaning that this kind of stuff goes so far from dnb dancefloor and expectations. Is it difficult to find a club or a community appreciating (and sometimes also dancing to) this 170 experimental deep stuff?
A: It’s pretty hard actually, most of the gigs I had was around my country and I wouldn’t say people really understand or feel it because it’s different though it’s still 170. But there’s already a community who enjoys this music around the world, yet remaining underground. I dream though about spinning to a bigger crowd, to people who actually know what they are listening to. The music that we represent is not for everybody. It’s a dnb layer for the open-minded.
Q: Do you think this music is about to find more space in the European underground scenes?
A: Well, I think this scene has a lot of potential and I see it growing. It’s nice to see new talents on the market especially when they are very young, that gives me hope that kids these days are listening to good music.
Q: In which situation you would play a music selection like the mix you made for us?
A: I guess in every situation. I always play what I enjoy.

Sono ormai passati più di due anni da quando Andrei Calin, Alexandru Brusten ed Alex Niculae fondarono a Bucarest l’etichetta Hangout Music. Coinvolti nella scena locale della Romania intrapresero attivamente un progetto che tendeva a scostarsi fin da subito dal suono drum’n’bass tradizionale. In diverse uscite, coniarono la propria identità, inizialmente improntata sul techstep, ma spostatasi poi verso un concept più evoluto, curato da Brusten e chiamato The Grey Division.
In questo articolo forniremo una velocissima occhiata (ed assolutamente incompleta) alla scena deep-dnb Europea. Presentiamo inoltre una recensione dell’ultima uscita Hangout Music del 2015, prodotta da Eusebeia ed intitolata Conscious Shift EP (in seguito a questo un altro EP è stato pubblicato dall’etichetta; vedi qui). Inoltre, includiamo anche una breve intervista fatta a K-Rob (Robert Kisi), producer Rumeno molto vicino alla Hangout. La sua traccia I Remember My Dreams è stata remixata da Eusebeia stesso: un breve passaggio del pezzo può essere ascoltato dal nostro canale Soundcloud. Infine, ultimo ma assolutamente non meno importante, ecco il fantastico mix di circa 60 minuti che K-Rob ha fatto per noi pronto per l’ascolto! Enjoy!
Tornando al The Grey Division project, è interessante notare come l’obiettivo di questo valido progetto sia la focalizzazione sulle esplorazioni Drum’n Bass post-Autonomic. Esso si muove su un fronte di allontanamento dal tradizionale dancefloor dnb, concentrandosi su un pubblico aperto e capace di ascoltare, riferendoci agli elementi tipici del Deep, anche Halfstep ed Ambient. In merito a questo concept, venne lanciata all’esordio la compilation di 11 tracce ‘Event Horizon LP, nella quale sono presenti diversi interessanti artisti europei emergenti e non come Owl, Dycide, Chet Matuto, Lefty ed Hidden Life.

Come riportato anche nell’artwork della release (prima immagine in alto), il passo successivo del progetto Grey Division si focalizza, piuttosto che su una collezione di tracce da diversi producer, su un singolo artista: Seb Watts, in arte Eusebeia, che inaugura con questo pseudonimo la chiusura del progetto Hidden Life. In soli pochi mesi, Eusebeia si sta dimostrando un artista iperattivo e pieno di idee. Il primo lavoro con questo alias, appunto, è uscito come EP di 4 tracce su Hangout Music nel Dicembre 2015 (disponibile sia digitalmente che a tiratura limitata di 50 copie in cassetta).
Per completare il quadro del personaggio, Seb Watts ha recentemente annunciato l’apertura della sua label Rebellion Electronics sulla quale ha rilasciato il suo primo full lenght ambient Post. Pubblica anche su CX Digital, sulla quale è uscito da poco l’emozionante EP Only Concerned with the Truth, e sulla storica Omni Music con il distensivo Dawn EP.
Conscious Shift è un lavoro introspettivo, e, come definito da Eusebeia stesso, è “finalizzato al miglioramento della comprensione di sé stessi (mentalmente, spiritualmente, verbalmente), premessa fondamentale per potersi sentire maggiormente in sintonia con il mondo che ci circonda.Un modo per spogliarci di ogni stimolo esterno, focalizzando la concentrazione nel raggiungimento di una pace interiore, espressione di equilibrio, costanza ed armonia, solida base per costruire il vero Io.”
La traccia in apertura, Smoke from the Fire, annuncia l’inizio del nostro pellegrinaggio interiore, incanalando la concentrazione in un beat trascinato e cavalcante, definito su un sospirato e leggermente distorto pad di sottofondo. Il flauto è l’elemento chiave per chiudere il cerchio di iniziazione, una guida rassicurante per ciò che troveremo più avanti. Proprio quando il beat aumenta di potenza liberando le basse frequenze, la cerimonia ha inizio.

The Temple è probabilmente la traccia più illuminante del lavoro di Eusebeia. La partenza mantiene una perfetta affinità con l’introduzione, portando ad un livello superiore il percorso trascinante e mistico del beat half-step d’apertura, lasciando lievi sfumature di volume alla chiusura di ogni sequenza percussiva. Lo stesso pacifico flauto della traccia precedente ora pare più morbido, ci permette di attraversare il velo di Maya, lasciandoci in balia di una contemplazione assoluta. contorni percussivi riverberati e rapide progresioni ambient sparse circondano la scena fin dalla partenza dell’elevatoria bassline.

Proof è il punto di svolta di Conscious Shift EP. Il ritmo è articolato in elementi fluttuanti e vorticosi, che quasi scandiscono il respiro di una concentrazione satura, impassibile al sottofondo ventoso. È arrivato il momento di liberare quest’energia: una barriera di sub-sonici bassi viene sfondata, circondandoci di rimbombanti frequenze che si sprigionano intorno a noi. La traiettoria segue legnosi colpi riverberati determinando la creazione di un muro che vibra a 85 bpm.

Dopo lo sprigionamento energetico il beat precedente viene ripreso, sfumato quasi arrivasse a far parte del nostro stesso spirito. No More Apathetic You (The Transformation) vuole essere un punto di non ritorno verso il raggiungimento di una forma completa, a cavallo di un articolato beat senza pause. Una cupola di cori e linee melodiche mistiche introducono morbide note celesti che circondano calorosamente la scena. Prima che le percussioni si dissolvano come soffocate, ogni suono si spenga, e non resti nulla intorno se non noi stessi.

INTERVISTA A K-ROB
Tra i lavori di Eusebeia, come riportato all’inizio dell’articolo, citiamo il remix della traccia ”I Remember my Dreams” prodotta da Robert Kisi, in arte K-Rob. Robert, oltre alle numerose produzioni, è conduttore del programma radiofonico Deep Structure sulla web radio Bassport FM, conosciuta tra gli amanti della bass music per le sue trasmissioni di indiscutibile valore. Come anticipato dal titolo, lo show è un tuffo negli antri più cupi e tormentati della Drum’n Bass, ed è sempre un’ottima occasione per ascoltare qualche dubplate e scoprire nuove etichette ed artisti.
K-Rob si è reso disponibile per essere intervistato e registrare un mix appositamente per la nostra webzine. Fedelmente affine alla linea oscura del suo programma radio, il mix vede l’inserimento, oltre ad incredibili tracce di nomi di rilievo della scena (Sam KDC, Shiken Hanzo, Homemade Weapons ed Ahmad), molto materiale unreleased prodotto dall’artista stesso e da altri dei quali Robert ha preferito non fare il nome. D: Ci pare d’aver capito che quest’anno ti focalizzerai molto sulla produzione. Ti va di raccontarci da cosa trai ispirazione, cosa descrive in modo più appropriato la tua musica e con quali label stai lavorando?
R: Esatto, mi sto concentrando sull’apprendimento di nuove cose e sulla ricerca di nuovi modi per esprimere le mie emozioni attraverso il mio lavoro. Sai, tutto si riduce a quello.. ciò che produco è riflessione di un’emozione, un sentimento, uno stato d’animo, in altre parole di una storia. Mi sono sempre sentito attratto dall’immaginario più cupo, dall’oscurità, dai suoni Sci-Fi, ad esempio l’OST del videogioco Deux Ex.
D: Ci dai un esempio di tracce da te prodotte che hanno un particolare significato, più di altre?
R: Sacred Black. l’ho prodotta quando sono stato ricoverato in ospedale, la linea melodica comunica uno stato d’animo pacifico, seguito poi dalla seconda parte della traccia nella quale descrivo come mi sono sentito successivamente.. Un’altra è Grounders. ho preso ispirazione dalla serie tv The 100. Mi ha davvero entusiasmato la storia: 97 anni dopo un fallout nucleare, dalla navicella spaziale che ospita gli ultimi esseri umani sopravvissuti vengono inviati 100 detenuti sulla Terra sperando in un ripopolamento del pianeta, ma in realtà trovando degli indigeni, chiamati Grounders.
D: Come nasce il tuo programma radio ‘Deep Structure’? Perchè questo nome?
R: E’ nato tutto nel 2014 quando ho ricevuto un messaggio da Bassport FM che mi chiedeva di registrare una promo session per loro. Qualche giorno dopo mandarono in onda il mix, e mi chiesero di iniziare il programma con cadenza mensile e così fu. Il nome chiaramente derivava dalla musica che promuovo. E’ profonda, oscura ed ipnotica.
D: Hai una label in particolare su cui vorresti uscire in futuro?
R: Si, sto attualmente collaborando con qualche label interessante e ho qualche progetto su cui sto lavorando. Ma non posso fare alcun nome. Posso solo dire che avrò delle sorprese e vi raccomando di seguire la mia pagina di soundcloud per aggiornamenti futuri.
D: Chi sono i tuoi artisti preferiti in questo momento?
R: Dyl, Natt, Alg0rh1tm, Eusebeia, Akinsa, ILL_K, Homemade Weapons, Sam KDC.
D: Qual’è la musica che ha accompagnato il tuo percorso nella produzione?
R: Oh, beh, è una lunga storia… Iniziò tutto quando avevo 13 anni. Un amico mi prestò una cassetta, una compilation di musica elettronica, non ne ricordo assolutamente il nome.. Ciò che ascoltai mi emozionò al punto di iniziare a cercare musica e sonorità nuove. La cassetta era una compilation di hardcore / techstep e drum’n bass, così iniziai a muovermi in quella direzione, pian piano addentrandomi nel lato più profondo ed oscuro del genere, ovvero dove mi trovo ora.
D: Relativamente al tuo orientamento musicale, è possibile dire che questo tipo di musica si allontana molto dal tipico dancefloor drum’n bass e dalle aspettative dei frequentatori di quella scena. E’ così difficile trovare un club o una situazione aperta all’ascolto (e talvolta, addirittura, al ballo) di queste sperimentazioni deep a 170 bpm?
R: Effettivamente è una situazione piuttosto complicata. La maggior parte dei miei show sono limitati alla Romania, e non direi che il pubblico riesca a comprendere totalmente quello che sta sentendo. Si tratta di qualcosa di completamente diverso, nonostante la musica sia di base a 170 bpm. C’è ad ogni modo una comunità discretamente vasta dislocata in giro per il mondo che apprezza davvero un genere così “underground”. Ovviamente il sogno è la scena si allarghi e l’utenza aumenti, coinvolgendo sempre più persone consapevoli di ciò che ascoltano. La musica che rappresentiamo non è per tutti. E’ l’ultima frontiera della drum’n bass per chi è più aperto di mente…
D: Credi che il genere possa prendere piede nelle scene underground europee?
R: Credo che questa scena abbia enorme potenziale, e sembra inoltre che si stia espandendo. Mi piace vedere nuovi talenti in azione, specialmente quando sono davvero giovani. E’ qualcosa che ti riempie di speranza e fiducia.
D: In quale situazione suoneresti una selezione musicale come quella scelta per il nostro mix?
R: Credo in qualsiasi situazione. Suono sempre ciò che amo.

In early 2017, we started our own event series in Turin, IT focused on arts, experimental, and dancefloor-oriented music. We reject every clumsy invocation to “the Future” meant as the signifier for capitalistic “progress” and “innovation”, fully embracing the Present instead; we renounce any reckless and ultimately arbitrary division between “high” and “low”, respectable and not respectable, “mind” and “body”; we support and invite musicians, artists, and performers having diverse backgrounds and expressing themselves via variegated artistic practices.
