Club to Club – the most famous electronic dance music festival in Italy, taking place in the city of Turin – had reached its 15th edition, which is the second one spanning 5 days overall (the first being #C2C14). We didn’t manage to attend all the events involved, yet we’d like to feature a short photographic selection and an (incomplete, but very interesting) video report appeared on our YouTube channel Paynomindtous: Live (http://bit.ly/Paynomind_Live) – for the FB photo album see here.

The artist’s selection had been much better with respect to #C2C14 – one year ago, a reasonable part of the sets was mainly bad. For #C2C15, two great news contributed in improving the Festival, namely the introduction of the RBMA’s Yellow Room – that managed to keep alive the intimate atmosphere of the smaller Sala Rossa (which was characterized by a highly intolerable mixture of sweat and passive smoking) but allowing the queues to be very rare over the nights – and the enlargement of Lingotto’s Main Stage. The impressive structure featured two side-screens (together with the main one at the artists’ back) which unfortunately had been rarely used – they would have for sure increased the impression of the music on the crowd.

#C2C15 reached many quality peaks during the five days. We choose as a precise moment the very emotional closing set at 5 AM by Lorenzo Senni on Lingotto’s Main Stage (here and here are two video takes of it). Standing Senni’s ground is Not Waving (Alessio Natalizia) and Powell (Diagonal // news::), whose sets slid one into the other – we were lucky enough to shot the moment in which they were both playing on the decks -, Thom Yorke’s Tomorrow Modern Boxes live with Nigel Godrich and Tarik Barr’s incredible visuals, and many other good performances: Furtherset’s breath-taking set, Lotic (as an improvised dancer)’s djset, Jamie XX’s anthems a là all-under-roof-raving, The Sprawl’s heaviness (aka Mumdance, Logos and Shapednoise, the latest author of a cathartic djset on Sunday at Astoria), and the digital overflows by Holly Herndon and Vaghe Stelle – unfortunately, we missed the chance to take a video of his wonderful live set, and the matinee at the Hotel by Morkebla. Big credit to #C2C15 for having gathered such of a huge amount of great artists and performances, keeping the whole-Festival ticket’s price on the same level of the most important events in the sector (Unsound, Atonal).

However, there’s room also for negative comments. Talking about the not-convincing performances, it’s possible to mention the almost-ridiculous QT’s appearance, that completely ruined a funny until-the-moment-QT-got-on-stage set by Sophie, and Omar Souleyman, whose presence is unexplainable for a Festival reaching for high-level musical and cultural standards – and would have felt inappropriate also in a racist z-movie. One of the worst moments is the two-hours-long, infinite Nicolas Jaar’s set played quite only alternating a low-pass/high-pass filtering and a beat summoning the crowd. Luckily enough Jeff Mills’ following tour de force managed in cheering up the night on the Main Stage. However, while it feels quite unfair to charge the Festival with any responsibility for the flop of Other People‘s boss, it’s possible to do that about the choices of inviting QT and Souleyman (together with La Priest’s embarrassing moments on stage), which are to blame. There’s no ‘avant-pop’ in it, let’s say. Furthermore, the gap between the too-much-joyful Todd Terje’s djset and Prurient’s live in RBMA’s Yellow Room had been accentuated by Kuedo’s missing performance.

Considering the entrance in Lingotto’s Thursday (free entry limited to Yellow Room, featuring the Gang of Ducks Soundsystem, Mumdance and Sophie + QT), Friday and Saturday nights, people had been searched very deeply, especially during the quiet hours – while the Stuarts understandably lacked attention in the most crowded moments. Shakedowns lead to the requisition of lighters, sprays, hair tonics, water bottles, snacks, saltines, and many other objects. Certified the fact that it is total freedom for the organizer to choose what the users could bring with them inside the location, similarly, it would have been much preferable to notify BEFORE the search/admission which objects were allowed or not. The possibility to miss the night – having already paid a certain amount for it – is quite a deterrent for people to protest after the searches and give up going in. A bottle of water, or some snacks, are essential for the attendee to go through the 10-hours-long night. We guess it’s very hard to find a valid relationship between the security for the #C2C15 events (or illegal drugs use prevention) and a lighter or a Kit-Kat – it is very interesting to notice, instead, the fact that Lingotto’s food points were offering sandwiches at the moderate price of 7€, plus 9€ for one single ‘Absolut Cocktail’ and 15€ for three of ‘Birra Carlsberg’. It’s an undeniable right for the organizers, however, to choose how much to ask for a drink – and for the user to buy it despite the drain.

Turin is a magical city that strongly affected us since the first time the attended Club To Club Festival – however, it’s the first time we are presenting a video report and comments through this webzine entry. Our will is to be active attendees for many editions further on and to be hitten and pleased by the Festival’s musical offer year by year. That’s the reason why we chose to give feedback which is at the most objective, honest and useful – at least, considering our sensitivity/passion.

PAYNOMINDTOUS is a non-profit organization registered in December 2018, operating since late 2015 as a webzine and media website. In early 2017, we started our own event series in Turin, IT focused on arts, experimental, and dancefloor-oriented music. We reject every clumsy invocation to “the Future” meant as the signifier for capitalistic “progress” and “innovation”, fully embracing the Present instead; we renounce any reckless and ultimately arbitrary division between “high” and “low”, respectable and not respectable, “mind” and “body”; we support and invite musicians, artists, and performers having diverse backgrounds and expressing themselves via variegated artistic practices.
